“Jonny Sheely worked with ICAAD from 2019 to 2021 as part of our pro bono partnership with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips on TrackGBV. TrackGBV examines sentencing decisions in sexual and gender-based violence cases across the Pacific Islands to identify where judicial reasoning relies on factors that reduce sentences at the survivor’s expense, such as customary reconciliation, gender stereotypes, or treating an offender as a first-time offender despite a history of violence. The evidence has informed judicial practice directives and reform efforts led with our Pacific partners.

Jonny took the case data reviewed by the legal teams for Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga and turned it into clear, usable reporting packages. Along the way he built a data formatter and reporting workbook that took a raw export of more than 100,000 records down to the cases that mattered, and he was careful to flag inconsistencies in the data so we could resolve them before drawing conclusions. He was thorough, responsive, and easy to work with, and his work supported the analysis behind our TrackGBV regional reporting and data dashboard.
